Real Musgrave along with his partner and wife Muff opened a gallery near their Texas home in 1974 to sell and display fantasy artwork. He drew his early inspiration for the little dragons from his dog Flower. She had a soulful face great disposition and loved cookies! Real says that a little piece of Flower lives on in every Pocket Dragon.
In 1988 Real and his friend Hap Henriksen also from Texas meet with Bill Dodd company chairman of Lilliput Lane. He liked what he saw and put Real to work. The original 1989 release included 27 Pocket Dragons. These pieces were manufactured at Lillput's facility in Stoke-On-Trent in England.
The company changed it's name in 1990 to Collectible World Studios. As business grew production was shifted more towards factories in China. Bill Dodd of Collectible World Studios explains: " The factories that we use have been carefully selected and they are in the Chineese Development Zone where the best working conditions are. Three members of our Board of Directors visit the factories 3 to 4 times a year each as do other managers and staff from the company and we take every precaution we can."
Begining in 2000 Pocket Dragon distribution in the US shifted away from Flambro Imports home of Willow Hall and the Emmett Kelly Jr, lines of collectibles. The new US Distributor is Goebel best know for the Hummel line of highly sought after figurines. To date aproximately 300 Pocket Dragon figurines have been released!
Most Pocket Dragons for the US market and manufactured in China while most Pocket Dragons for the European Market are manufactured in Stroke-On-Kent. Real is the sole sculpter of all the creations and the same molds are used in both Chinese and English production. Real personally assured us that the colors and painting quality of the Chineese manufactured pieces match that of the English manufactured pieces.
