JAPANESE MUSEUM NETSUKE

The Netsuke Superstore

The traditional Japanese kimono lacked pockets. Netsuke (toggles) were devised as a means to hang pouches, thus enabling the wearer to carry personal items. A practical invention that endured over 300 years, netsuke evolved into a unique form of miniature sculpture. Netsuke subjects varied widely, including deities, legendary heroes, and animals. By the late nineteenth century, the beautifully delicate miniatures that could be held in the palm of the hand had captured the attention of Western collectors.

Restrictive trade policies of the 17th century isolated Japan from foreign influence for 230 years. Thus began a great period of peace in which art, particularly miniature art, flourished and developed national characteristics. Subjects varied widely, including deities, legendary heroes, and animals. Artists aspired to the technical perfection of precise details. With the opening of Japan to foreign trade in the 19th century, Japanese miniature sculpture immediately captured the attention of Western collectors.

The best things come in small packages! Beautifully wrapped, each individual netsuke is ready to present as a thoughtful & impressive gift. Much as the obi encircled the waist, a simple but elegant black box is encircled with a colorful sleeve bearing a calligraphic image and short history of the individual netsuke. These resin figurines are carefully hand crafted and hand painted in China.
